20 Years Ago: Reggie scored 8 points in 8.9 seconds

May 7, 1995 — Inside the historic Madison Square Garden in New York City, Hall of Famer Reggie Miller unbelievably scored eight points in 8.9 seconds on the Knicks, their rival.

It was Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, a series the Pacers would win, 4-3. Advancing to the conference finals, they lost to the Orlando Magic in seven games.

While I was too young to remember it, I won’t ever forget the story Donnie Walsh has shared of him being so fed up, that he went to a back room at the Garden late in the game to have a smoke. When told the Pacers were back in the game and had a chance, the team’s exec thought it was an evil joke.

From that night came one of the better sound bites in sports. Knicks guard John Starks’ “Did this dude just did this.”
