Beat the Throw: No room for complacency in a competitive field

In today’s beat the throw segment, I’m talking about not being satisfied and advancing in your field every day on the job.

There is no room to get comfortable and satisfied today in such a competitive job market. Today more than ever, it is imperative to be on top of things and ahead of the curve.

Just last week it was announced that Pacers sideline reporter Stacy Paetz would not return. The Ball State grad had been with Fox Sports Indiana since 2004.

Personally, I am always working to get better, for just those reasons. First of all, I don’t have a full-time job so it is important for me to stand out amongst the pack.

I do so by broadcasting as many games as I can. I do so by writing right here on VigilantSports.com. And I do so by covering as many events as I can—invaluable experience I don’t take for granted.

Jobs are few and far between right now in the slowly improving economy. While it is back on the way up, many very qualified people are struggling to find work.

I know many friends that have a college degree, 10+ years experience and they are too qualified for the pay scale available.

Whether you specialize in journalism, business or chemistry, focus on getting better. Don’t get comfortable, don’t get stagnate. Getting too comfortable is a recipe for disaster.

You, your company and the audience deserves better.
