Edmond Sumner scores nine points in professional debut

Edmond Sumner finished with nine points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in his first 12 minutes of professional basketball. The 22-year-old returned to the court Friday night in Fort Wayne with the Mad Ants of the G League, making his debut with the Pacers organization.

The Pacers acquired the 52nd overall pick in June’s draft from New Orleans for cash considerations — which they then used to draft Sumner out of Xavier. If not for having left ACL surgery after tearing it on Jan. 28, 2017, he would have been taken earlier.

It was Sumner’s first game in 354 days.

“I thought he played well,” Mad Ants coach Steve Gansey said after their 131-130 win over the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

“He scored his first professional basket with that free throw. He got to the line, he got to the basket, a dunk and everything. It’s going to come to him. He’s been working his butt off over the summer but he hasn’t played in a game. You could tell he was tired.”

Sumner, who started, is currently on a 15-minute restriction. The majority of his minutes Friday were in the first quarter.

The Mad Ants (16-12) return to action on Monday in Ontario against Raptors 905.
