Indiana fans and media must be patient in football coaching search

One week ago, the IU football team took it to Purdue and returned with the Old Oaken Bucket in hand.

Six days ago, Fred Glass announced the firing of 4th year head coach Bill Lynch.

And now, less than a week from his announcement, fans and media alike are reading into every rumor and tracking every flight out of Bloomington. That’s a bit overkill.

Fred Glass is a well tenured executive that is not going to fall in love with a coach at first sight. He’s not going to hire a coach in a week and he’s not going to confirm or deny every rumors all over the Internet.

The great thing about the Internet now days is the wealth of instant information. The con about the Internet now days is the wealth of instant information.

These “sources” must first be questioned especially a website that tries to break football stories (Football Rumor Mill) yet has little credibility and only has 1,300 followers on twitter. Obviously they will throw out their line and post anything they can reel in, true or not.

Fans and media alike must remember what Indiana Athletic Director Fred Glass said six days ago.

The people that are doing the talking don’t know, and the people that know aren’t talking. I’m ultimately going to be responsible for this. If you haven’t taken it from me, I would take it with a huge grain of salt.

My observation of these from afar is you have all kinds of people taking themselves out of searches they were never in and declining jobs they were never offered and so forth and so on. I’m not going to comment on those as we go along because where does that end? The fact that I’m not commenting doesn’t mean there is particular truth to it. It is because I’m not commenting.”

Let’s give Glass time to do his complete his due diligence and find the coach that fits best. It shouldn’t matter if it is announced today, or after the first of the year.

It’s best for Glass to interview multiple candidates, talk with his resources like Bill Polian, Tony Dungy, Chuck Neinas, and get the right guy for this job.

“It is more important that we do it right instead of doing it fast.”
