Indiana fortunate to have three fantastic radio voices

The state of Indiana is lucky to have three golden voices on the radio call. Don Fischer, Bob Lamey and Mark Boyle are all Indiana broadcasting icons that are important and popular with their respective teams.

These three have a combined 86 seasons of broadcasting under their belt just with their current teams.

Don Fischer, the Voice of the Indiana Hoosiers will forever be an iconic voice in the state of Indiana. Now in his 38th year, IU isn’t the same without Fischer. Nobody else is even close. Not only has Fish called football and basketball games for what seems like forever, he also emcees numerous events at the university and throughout the state.

He has called all but one football game in his time. The lone miss was a bowl game in which they didn’t have broadcasting rights.

Fischer has called three basketball national championships and has worked with Bob Knight, Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson, and now Tom Crean.

Just this week he was named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year, for the 25th time! The Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association inducted Fischer into the ISSA Hall of Fame in 2004.

Bob Lamey just completed his 25th season with the Indianapolis Colts. He has called every game since the team moved to Indianapolis except the 1992-1994 seasons.

Lamey is known for being a big “homer,” although that is what most Colts fans love about him. He says what every fan is thinking. He expresses the positives as well as the negatives.

He provides a great perspective into his broadcasts as well as emotion. When the Colts score a touchdown, every one of his calls are electric and enjoyable.

Mark Boyle has been the Voice of the Indiana Pacers for 23 years now. He is the most fluid play-by-play guy I’ve ever heard with a tremendous vocabulary.

As a radio guy, he describes everything so well that it seems as though I’m there. He rarely describes a pass or shot with the same words.

Boyle is a unique guy to say the least. He isn’t the most personable and outgoing guy you come across, but he thrives on the airwaves. The duo of Boyle and Bobby “Slick” Leonard has been top-notch for so many years.

Boyle has twice been named Indiana’s Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

As an aspiring play-by-play announcer, I have learned a lot of things from each and every one of them. Next time you are listening to IU, Colts or Pacers, enjoy the broadcast because these three are some of the best.
