Indiana’s Will Sheehey works out for Pacers

The Pacers hosted another set of six prospects Friday afternoon for a pre-draft workout on the practice court at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. At the conclusion of their workout, around noon, Will Sheehey, who just finished playing four years down in Bloomington for IU, was the most popular interview – as expected.

Sheehey puts shots up at the end of the workout.

“We just competed a lot more in this one than in the previous ones,” Sheehey said afterwards in front of more than a dozen reporters. “But that’s good. That’s what I like to do.”

Sheehey said he has worked out for “five or six” teams, declining to name who. “Just a bunch of teams,” he provided.

“I’m just going through them, playing as hard as I can,” said Sheehey, who kept things short. “Just trying to show everybody what I got.”

Since graduating in May, the IU graduate has been working out in New York where both his father and his agent, Marc Cornstein, are located.

The pre-draft grind is taxing for these players, on top of the pressure that goes with it. A typical day begins at 8 a.m. and doesn’t conclude until around 4 p.m. Then, it’s on to another city – and the traveling is the most difficult part.

“Even in college you travel a lot,” Sheehey admitted, “but it’s a lot of different cities and a lot of different time zones. That hurts sometimes.”

As for what he sees in the Pacers: “Well, they’re hard-nosed – blue collar,” he said. “And that’s pretty much what I am. They give it all on the court and that’s what I want to do as well.”

During his senior season, Sheehey averaged 11.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting better than 47 percent from the field. At this point, it’s unlikely that he hears his named called on draft night, June 26. He’s keeping an open mind about his options and said that if he’s not drafted, he hopes to land on a summer league team to further prove his case.

“Just I’m going to bring the same consistency everyday,” said Sheehey of what he’s showing teams. “I’m a guy that’s going to practice hard every single day and I’m going to be the guy that’s in the best shape of anybody on the team. And I’m going to make shots. I want to space the floor. I’m also very athletic so I can find areas where I can use that athleticism.”

Sheehey said he’s slated for about five more workouts.

In addition to Sheehey, the workout included Davion Berry (Weber State), DeAndre Daniels (Connectiut), Russ Smith (Lousiville), Xaiver Thames (San Diego State), and Kendall Williams (New Mexico).
