IndyCar stumbles, again – series to stay at 15 races in 2012

The 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series will settle for 15 races this season.

After cancellation of the race in China scheduled for August 13th, officials sought out a potential replacement but ultimately decided against it.

And that’s a shame.

All the great tracks in the United States and they can’t seal the deal on a replacement, or better yet, choose not to.

“After carefully considering all possible options for an additional race, we felt it was in our best interest to keep our schedule at its current 15-event lineup,” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said in a statement.

“We want to make sure that when we add events to our roster they have long-term potential and are given every opportunity to be successfully promoted. The more we explored, the more we felt like we were rushing what could be good, long-lasting opportunities for the sport.

There are so many options. Like Texas, Milwaukee, and best of all, here in Indianapolis.

How about utilizing the road course at the World’s Greatest Racetrack? It makes too much sense and the crowd is already here.

Why not? Well, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway people are probably arguing against it. They want to keep their track “pure,” and maintain just one IndyCar race there per year.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and that’s the sad state of IndyCar right now.

Unfortunately, it’s not happening and there is one less race. Instead, the series announced that the finale at Auto Club Speedway on Sept. 15 will be extended to 500 miles.

Yawn.
