Nike unveils Paul George’s first signature shoe: PG1

The PG1s were unveiled on January 9th ahead of the Pacers’ game in London.

Finally, it’s here.

Nike introduced Paul George first signature shoe on Monday. The launch of the PG1s corresponds with the Indiana Pacers’ participation in the NBA Global Games with their game to played in London.

This has been in the works for a while, at least three years. I’ve probably asked George about it a dozen times over the last four years and to his credit (for Nike), he’s been mum. Other than hinting, “It’s coming soon.” But that timetable has changed multiple times.

George’s shoe was scheduled to debut years ago, even before the KYRIE 1 launched. But then he suffered the compound fracture injury and they waited for the time to be right.

Ultimately, Nike and CAA, which represents George, decided for the three-time NBA All-Star to push his signature shoe first while across the pond in London.

George’s shoe will retail for $110 — a good value. KYRIE 3s are $120, LeBron’s go for $140, and Kevin Durant’s KD 9 will set you back $150, according to Nike.com. Nike has not yet announced when the shoe will be available for purchase.

George is one of just four current NBA players with Nike Basketball to have his own shoe — joining LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving — and the 21st Nike Basketball player over 44 years to ever have a signature shoe.

The PG1 was designed by Tony Hardman with plenty of input from the 26-year-old star. George’s influence in the shoe is evident, highlighting some of his favorite things.

Description of the PG1s from Nike:

  • Forefoot strap with Flywire technology loop system provides adaptive support
  • Zoom Air unit under the forefoot and plush sockliner provide responsive cushioning
  • Full-bootie construction delivers a snug, 1-to-1 fit
  • Multidirectional scale-inspired blade traction provides ultimate court grip

And we know George loves to fish, so this lace on front is a nice touch.

How about a bobber-like lace?

It’s been quite a busy year for PG and his brand, right? He added an endorsement deal with Jeep, was put on the cover of the top-selling NBA video game, won a gold medal at the Olympics, designed and launched a hat line with New Era, and he has his own shoe — a dream of his for some time now.

The shoe pictured was inspired by George’s passion for gaming and because he’s the cover man for NBA2K17, and it is one of several colorways expected to be available.

PG’s likeness from NBA2K appears on the sole of this colorway.

Much of it reminds me of the Hyperdunk and Hyperrev, the shoes of choice for PG. He’s a size 13.
