Pacers coach Frank Vogel and swingman Paul George will in this year’s IPL 500 Festival Parade slated for Saturday, May 23rd at noon. It’s an annual tradition, the day before the race, for the 33 drivers in the Indianapolis 500, local dignitaries and celebrities to parade around downtown Indianapolis.
With the Pacers not qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in five years, guys have more time than they’re used to having this time of year and affords them opportunities to be involved in other events. In fact, it’s the first time that both Vogel and George have missed out on the postseason.
George won his first fishing tournament and George Hill colored his hair blonde.
I’ve also heard that George will be among the VIPs to attend the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 the following day. An IMS spokesperson would only add that the list will be released the week of the race.
The Grand Marshals for this year are members of the 1955 Crispus Attucks Basketball team, including Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. (The Indiana Fever were the Grand Marshals in 2013 after winning their first WNBA Championship in October, 2012.)
From the Colts, punter Pat McAfee and tight end Dwayne Allen are schedule to be there, along with former linebacker Gary Brackett, Olympic Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin, and cappella group Straight No Chaser. Nico & Vinz, best known for their hit song, “Am I Wrong,” will be performing.
The IPL 500 Festival Parade is one of the nation’s largest festivals, with more than half a million people expected. It’ll air nationally on NBC Sports Network and live locally on WTHR. Reserve tickets are $15.
