The order of the 2015 NBA Draft will be finalized Tuesday night at the 31st annual Draft Lottery. From the New York Hilton Midtown, the 14 lottery teams will have their positioning decided by ping-pong balls. It’ll be televised by ESPN from 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm ET.
The Pacers will be represented on stage by Larry Bird, the Pacers President of Basketball Operations, and in the lottery room by David Benner, the Director of Media Relations. Danny Granger represented the team in 2010, the last time they were in the lottery.
How It Works
14 ping-pong balls numbered 1 through 14 will be in the lottery machine and mixed for 20 seconds. Four balls will then be drawn out, allowing 10 seconds between each drawing.
They will then repeat the process two more times to settle which three teams have the top three picks. Picks 4 through 14 will then be based on team records for the season. There are 1,001 different number combinations — 1,000 of them assigned to the 14 teams.
After the lottery show, a video of how things went down in the lottery room will be available to watch. (Click here to watch last year’s drawings.)
The room is very secure, as you’d expect. Cell phones are taken away and should you need to use the restroom, you will be escorted.
Denise Pelli, a partner at accounting firm Ernst & Young, will oversee the whole process. The lottery results will be read on stage by NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum.
Odds
Because the Pacers finished with the same record (38-44) as the Utah Jazz, a tiebreaker was held on April 17th and the Pacers won the random drawing.
The Pacers’ probability to land the first pick is 0.8. They have a 2.9 percent chance to end up in the top three and a 90.7 percent chance to stay at pick No. 11.
