Sources: Stephanie White to be named Vanderbilt women’s basketball coach

Tamika Catchings won’t be the only key individual leaving the Indiana Fever at the conclusion of their season.

Stephanie White has accepted the job to be the next head women’s basketball coach at Vanderbilt University, sources informed VigilantSports.com. An announcement will be made on Tuesday.

Catchings, of course, will retire at season’s end.

Fellow ESPN analyst and former Vanderbilt player Carolyn Peck (1985-88) — White’s coach at Purdue for two seasons, including their 1999 NCAA Championship season — will join her staff as associate head coach, per another source.

After reports surfaced late last week that White interviewed for the job, the Fever released a statement from both coach White and Fever President and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf.

“In the offseason, Stephanie made it known that she is interested in pursuing college coaching,” said Krauskopf. “We agreed that she would remain with the Fever for the 2016 season. It is not my desire for her to leave our franchise, but I felt the right thing to do was to allow her to pursue her goal of coaching in college.”

This won’t be White’s first coaching job in the college ranks. She previously has been an assistant at Ball State (2003-04), Kansas State (2004-05) and Toledo (2005-07).

White, 38, took over for Hall of Fame coach Lin Dunn last season and became the first rookie head coach in the WNBA to lead a team to the finals. They lost to Minnesota in five games, 3-2.

“It has always been a goal of mine to get back into college coaching at some point in my career, but it had to be the ‘perfect’ opportunity in order for me to consider leaving this job that I love very much,” White said in the statement.

White returned to the Fever in 2011 as an assistant, and then she was promoted to associate head coach ahead of the 2014 season, Dunn’s last as head coach.

In accepting this job with Vanderbilt, White gains stability for her family and the opportunity to direct a team playing in an outstanding conference for women’s basketball while at a strong academic school.

For the last two years, the Seeger High School product and 1995 Indiana Miss Basketball, has effectively worn several hats: head coach of the Fever, studio analyst for Pacers broadcasts on FOX Sports Indiana, and college basketball analyst on ESPN and the Big Ten Network.

White intends to finish out the Fever season before moving to Nashville full-time to lead the Commodores. However, with it being an Olympic year, she will have a month-long break — from July 23 to August 24 — to spend significant time on her new coaching gig.

Melanie Balcomb previously lead the program since the 2002-03 season, going 310-149 in a very competitive SEC Conference. She announced her resignation on April 27th.
