New Indiana football head coach Kevin Wilson has taken his time hiring his staff. One common characteristic that exists: they’re all winners.
Wilson announced Thursday that Brent Pease will serve as offensive coordinator and quarterback’s coach.
Pease, a former NFL quarterback is a coaching veteran. Prior to coaching at Boise State for the last five years, he was the offensive coordinator at Montana (1991-98), Northern Arizona (1999-00), Kentucky (2001-02) and Baylor (2003-05).
“We are pleased and excited Brent is joining us,” Kevin Wilson said. “He had an excellent playing career in the collegiate and professional ranks. Brent has coordinated in the Big 12 and the SEC, and he is coming from one of the most dominant programs in college football over the last decade in Boise State. We look forward to integrating his offensive ideas from Boise State into to what we have done in the past.”
This announcement comes about a week after Wilson hired Mark Hagen and Corey Raymond on to his defensive staff. Hagen will coach the defensive tackles and serve as special teams coordinator, while Raymond will coach the cornerbacks.
Wilson first named Doug Mallory and Mike Ekeler as co-defensive coordinators.
The common trait: winners.
Each of these guys comes from a winning program and has a pedigree of getting the job done on the field.
Ekeler last coached the linebackers at Nebraska and needs little introduction to Big Ten fans. Hagen returns to his alma mater after coaching at Purdue for 11 years and coaching multiple bowl games. Raymond coached at Utah State and LSU.
And now Pease comes from the hot, mid-major Boise State program that has made tremendous strides in the last five years.
Wilson hopes that these winning coaches will bringing their winning mentality and attitude to the Hoosiers football program. Every one of these guys has coached multiple bowl games.
Coach Wilson is changing the culture. He is changing the attitude. And he is changing the way Indiana recruits.
All of these coaches have a unique recruiting pipeline and geographic region. Not only will their winning mentality help alter the Indiana program, the recruits will come.
Indiana’s newest hire Brent Pease has coached in a bowl game in each of his five seasons at Boise State, including two Fiesta Bowl victories. He has reached the postseason 12 times in his career with a national championship in 1995.
Kevin Wilson knows what he is doing and Indiana fans must appreciate the decisions he has made to alter the football program.
Just like with Indiana basketball, it will take time and Hoosier fans must be patient.
Fred Glass made resources available for Wilson.
And Wilson is hiring quality guys that know how to win.
