UConn women’s basketball win streak ends at 90

The streak is over.

The record winning streak of University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team came to an end Thursday night to the last team to beat the Huskies.

No. 8 Stanford topped No.1 UConn 71-59 brining an end to the Huskies unprecedented streak of 90 wins in a row, the longest in NCAA Division I basketball history. They just surpassed John Wooden’s UCLA teams’ 88 wins in a row from 1971 to 1974.

The Huskies last loss came on April 6, 2008 to Stanford in the Final Four.

UConn’s win streak was so impressive because of the parity in the world today. NCAA women’s basketball however doesn’t quite have the same competition as other sports. The Huskies were beating their opponent by an average of 33 points per game.

Geno Auriemma is dominating the competition both on the court and on the recruiting trail. Of the eleven players on UConn’s roster, eight were McDonald’s All-Americans.

Nevertheless all good things must come to an end.

It’s ignorant that others ignore the streak and don’t care purely because its women’s basketball.

On any given day, any team can beat anyone. It just so happens the University of Connecticut was able to win 90 in a row. And that may stand for decades.

Then again, records are made to be broken.
