Rainy 500

This past weekend was the Little 500 or as Indiana University students call it, “The Greatest College Weekend.” And this last week did not disappoint. It was full of concerts, excitement and great weather…that is until the day of the men’s race.

Friday wasn’t too bad though it felt like a sauna! You could just feel the storm coming.

The women’s and men’s races were a matter of the best team winning. While many teams could use the weather as an excuse, it was not. The two most powerful teams were successful in winning the Little 500.

In the women’s race, Teter used a comeback led by their top rider to fuel a victory. Teter won every weekend in April (individual time trials, miss ‘N’ out and team pursuit.) They were the strongest team and it came to fruition on Friday night. Teter led most of the way in what was a solid race.

The Cutters showed no weakness in their unprecedented fourth consecutive victory. It took about a half-hour rain delay to get the final 96 laps in but it was well worth it for their team. It was the same four-members that had won the previous year. The Cutters have now won 11 times in the past 26 years…talk about doing work. The problem is that the Little 500 is made up and supported almost completely by Greek houses. And no Greek house enjoys seeing the Cutters win. Not a huge following. Not many fans in the stands. Fine with them—they just continue to win.

By far the highlight of the men’s race was the rain storm. That is when the true fans separated themselves from the casual observer.

After completing 104 laps, the red flag was brought out and the race was put on hold. Rain is fine but lightning and thunder was in the vicinity. The Cutters at this point had the lead and began to celebrate. There were many great chants back and forth between Beta and Phi Psi, the only two groups of fans remaining in their seats. Nearly a half-hour later the rain stopped and an old guy that looked like Santa was on the track to dry it.

“1 more lap”, “Let them ride,” “Hell no, we won’t go” and “I’ve been colder” were the best chants. But “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” in honor of the man operating the blow dryer will not be forgotten. The students overall morale was strong and their support was tremendous. That is what Little Five is all about. Bring communities, houses and people together to support causes like this one.

Little 500 cannot be defined, it cannot be mistaken. One must experience it for themselves to fully comprehend “The Greatest College Weekend.” Only one team can win…though the memories last forever.

–>On a side note, Purdue’s Grand Prix was won by a student from IUPUI, and another IUPUI student took second place. So much for go-karts.
