After what appeared like a last minute trade before the 3 p.m. deadline, Indiana and Memphis were unable to come to terms. The reported deal sent Josh McRoberts and the Pacers 1st round pick to Memphis for O.J. Mayo.
There are various reports and differing opinions on what exactly happened. Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star wrote, “A Pacers official with knowledge of the situation said the Grizzlies decided to pull out at the last minute.”
“Despite published reports, O.J. was not traded,” Memphis general manager Chris Wallace said in a tweet.
Later, "It is with deep regret that I think we need to bring another power forward in,” Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley said in a statement. “We’re overloaded at the two-three position. So I think it’s probably best for the Grizzlies and best for O.J. that he’ll get to play for a team where he can get a lot more minutes.”
David Aldridge of TNT tweeted that this deal fell through on Indiana’s end.
Mayo was averaging 12.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2 assists per game this season.
Some Pacers players are active on twitter with their own responses to the deal.
Point guard T.J. Ford tweeted, “Sad if the Pacers really traded my good friend " Josh McRoberts" kids playing great this yr.”
Rookie Paul George was relieved. “Phewww coo we keep JMac!!! He been doin great for us wouldve been tough to lose him!”
The Captain, Danny Granger said, “That trade didn’t go through people.”
This is the social media age, where every part of the deal, the highs and lows are sent out to followers. The problem was demonstrated with this whole situation, where it back and forth and nobody knew for sure what really went down.
Nonetheless, the Pacers didn’t make any trade before the deadline and will have some consistency with a team that has gone 9-3 under interim head coach Frank Vogel. Indiana hosts Gordon Hayward and the Utah Jazz to Conseco Fieldhouse Friday night.
