When I was in school, I looked forward to the day before Thanksgiving because it meant the start of the boys basketball season. I always looked forward to broadcasting my first boys game of the season in a double-header following the girls game.
Now out of high school, the game is a time to support my North Central Panthers, see familiar coaches and athletic personnel while also enjoying a great game. The annual North Central and Pike rivalry has been going on as long as I can remember and is a heated matchup between top Indianapolis schools that have produced many quality players.
Over the years, alumni, family and friends from out of town all attend the game. Some were supporting siblings, while others supported what they used to be a part of.
Last year was a complete disappointment for some friends and I, as the Pike administration screwed up completely in hosting the big game. I had a ticket, stood in line outside in cold temperatures, only to be told at the end of the third quarter that they wouldn’t let any more fans in. That’s one big reason I’m happy tonight’s game is at North Central. No problems.
The Pike at North Central game isn’t the only appealing game in the Indianapolis area. Downtown at Conseco Fieldhouse, Lawrence Central and Lawrence North hit the floor at 9 pm. Other big games include Brebeuf at Zionsville and Carmel at Brownsburg.
When the family is in town and all together, I suggest heading out to your local high school to catch some hoops or go support your Alma mater. I always look forward to this night, reuniting with friends at a place where so many great memories were made.
