Last week, I told you how to network effectively. Going along with that this week, it is important that you have a professional business card already made up that are representational of the image you want to convey. Business cards are not very pricey but they can give you one leg up on the competition.
A couple of summers ago, I first ventured out to make my own basic business card with my name, number and email address that I began to give out to various new acquaintances.
It is a great way to stay in another’s mind, especially if they are meeting a lot of people at one time. Plus, it is a reason for the person to give you theirs as well.
Then last summer, I got real serious, ordering them online and ensuring I have all the details on them for others to find me.
I’d suggest VistaPrint.com because they do a great job for a relatively low-price. The key thing with them is to find the right deal that fits you. I initially bought 1,000 for $10 shipped. It’s hard to beat that.
One thing I wanted to include was a picture of myself doing what I do. And that’s broadcasting. That way, the person I give it to has a lasting image to remember me by and the headset shows what I’m about.
I also want to show that I am multi-dimensional and on top of social media. Therefore I list my website, twitter and LinkedIn account, in addition to the usual phone number and email address.
Make sure the cards are on hard-stock, and when I do it again, a glossy finish is a great touch. Keep a simple and clean look. Don’t get too fancy with multiple bright colors.
These are the little things that can help get you in the door and scheduled for an interviewed. They won’t get you a job and they won’t seal the deal because you can either do the job or you can’t. There’s no faking it.
In the sports field, the competition is stiff…I know that more than anyone. One of my favorite sayings is, “up early working while the competition sleeps.” Having your own business card is another way for you to gain a leg up, especially with college grads having a very tough time finding jobs.
It’s simple. It’s cheap. And it’s memorable. Will you make the effort? Do it, now!
