Boost Mobile becomes WNBA’s marquee sponsor

The WNBA has landed one of its most lucrative sponsorship in league history, adding Boost Mobile as a “marquee” sponsor.

A four-year deal worth about $10 millon total, puts the Boost Mobile logo on 10 of the 12 teams’ jerseys,  according to the SportsBusinessJournal.

The Phoenix Mercury and San Antonio Silver Stars will be excluded because they already have previous wireless deals, with Verizon and AT&T respectively.

In addition to the logo placement, Boost Mobile becomes the title sponsor of the annual WNBA All-Star game and the presenting sponsor of the playoffs. The company will also receive floor, court and arena signage in all 12 cities.

Phoenix, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, and Seattle all have jersey title sponsors already and now will sport two logos on the front of their team jersey. Phoenix got the ball rolling a couple years ago with LifeLock, and it has since been a game-changer. I know many other teams have offers on the table, but not in their range yet.

“[This deal] is transformative in its size, scope and breadth,” said first-year WNBA President Laurel Richie. “Our focus is making the partnership as robust as we possibly can, and while I know there will be a lot of attention to the jersey component, we will be doing a ton of other activation programs.”

The WNBA is celebrating their 15th year this season and they are only getting stronger. Televisions ratings are trending upward, thanks to their deal with ESPN.

And with teams limited to 11 players, talent is spread throughout the league. The downsize to the rosters, which used to be as high as 15, do keep some worthy players from playing in the league–there are only 132 roster spots.

Communities are beginning to realize how skilled these players are and how passionately they play, every night. There aren’t going to be ‘bring down the house’ dunks, but you’ll see teamwork, hustle, and unselfishness.

This deal really helps a league still very young. Fans are finally taking notice, and putting stereotypes away. The logo on jerseys will make their debut Tuesday night.

Boost Mobile, owned by Sprint, offers no-contract wireless phones and service.
