Three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves is doing “fine” after jamming the left front of his No. 3 car into the wall and then flipping twice.
“Helio’s fine,” team owner Roger Penske said outside of the medical center. “It looks like the car got backwards and got air underneath it and the car flipped. … No broken bones, nothing.”
Castroneves was evaluated after the crash, standard procedure for a driver who hits the wall. Penske, who had been inside talking with his driver, said Castroneves was alert and simply resting inside.
A team spokesmen said Castroneves would not speak to the media today.
Castroneves’ wreck was scary, a a bit surprising with the new aero kits supposed to prevent these type of incidents. In that car, he turned the fastest lap on Tuesday, 39.5580, and the top speed, 227.514.
Penske does not believe anything broke on the car to cause the wreck. Because of the extent of the damage, the team will now use a backup car.
