But it was held up a bit.
Community day is always fun for race fans and Indianapolis residents to come out to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and see their favorite drivers up close and personal.
Wednesday was full of weather problems as you have to know by now. Local stations interrupted everything and were on all evening tracking storms. Surprisingly, the weather didn’t impact the day’s events too much.
Some of the “carnival” events for children like obstacle courses, a tire-changing station and local RadioNow all had to pack up early due to high winds. There was the occasional sprinkle but the day went on without a hitch.
The weather may have turned some fans off however. The crowd seemed much smaller than I remember in previous years. That’s unfortunate because the day is very fun, especially for young kids.
One of the best things about the day is that the track allows fans to drive their cars on the 2.5 mile oval. And it was busy all day long.
In the afternoon, there were two autograph sessions where fans could meet and interact with the drivers in this years’ Indianapolis 500.
The amazing thing was that injured ‘Swiss Miss,’ Simona de Silvestro signed autographs despite her burned hands. Pretty tough, pretty cool.
Thursday the Firestone Indy Lights drivers will have practice and the media will get their last chance to talk with drivers before race day. Friday is carb day and of course the race is Sunday. Don’t forget, the race will get underway at noon this year, earlier than usual.
