DJ Steve Porter became a YouTube sensation nearly overnight more than two years ago. On June 21st, 2009, Steve released a music video he produced entitled, “Press Hop,” which featured some of the most popular press conferences like Allen Iverson and coach Jim Mora.
He has a strong passion of music, that led him to start producing music at the age of 16. It’s very challenging to catch a break in the music industry, and Porter was able to turn this niche into his full-time career.
One week after Press Hop hit YouTube, ESPN came calling. In 2010, Porter produced weekly hits for their NFL show and then made the theme to the NBA playoffs. Since he has done a variety of productions including work for the Dallas Mavericks and New York Knights.
Over the weekend he was in Bloomington for Hoosier Hysteria, a spectacular show that marks the start of the college basketball season. He debuted his first IU basketball video and kept the music flowing Saturday night.
Porter loves sports, especially college basketball so it fits — and he was surprised and excited to see 16,000 strong at Assembly Hall. Indiana contacted Porter this fall to make a mix of the football team called, “Win Today!”
Throughout the basketball season, he told me he will make about five highlights all focusing around the central theme. There are so many elements that go into each mix. 1) Picking the focal point and message, 2) organizing the material he has to work with, 3) laying down a beat, 4) cutting the video and sound, 5) mixing it all together in a specific amount of time. Sounds simple, but it’s not…most take about two weeks to get right.
I had DJ Steve Porter on my radio show Sunday and we talked about Hoosier Hysteria, how the idea started, being picked up by ESPN, and I suggest a new mix for him to make. Listen to it below, or click here.
