Doing anything possible for the ‘experience’-four games, four locations

I am a go-getter. I will do whatever possible to gain valuable experience in the sports broadcasting industry. At 21, I already extensive background in sports and broadcasting but I will do just about anything to meet more people and gain even more experience. After all, one can never stop learning.

This long weekend will be a long adventure for me if you will. Four games. Four days. Four venues. Sounds like a heck of a weekend to me.

Thursday night I called the Indiana’s women’s basketball game against Illinois on the Big Ten Network. It will re-air Friday at 10 am. The BTN’s ‘Student U’ program has greatly benefited students like myself while giving university and their fans more coverage.

Friday I am working the Pacers game, in charge of the visitors (Bulls) locker room as always. I have held this job nine years and love every moment. The unique access, atmosphere and team feel are what stand out the most.

Immediately following the game, myself and my good friend Anthony Calhoun are driving to Dayton, Ohio. AC is calling the Duquesne versus Dayton women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon on CBS College Sports. As his stats guy, I tag along to keep him company in addition to my duties during the game.

Then Sunday, he is broadcasting the Butler game at Wright State with Ralph Reiff on WNDY– Channel 23.

The only problem with this four day stint means that Saturday night, I will miss the Hoosiers Big Ten game against Michigan. I am the most faithful and loyal IU basketball fan, usually refusing to miss a game—however this road trip and experience is too good to pass up.

If you want to do something, go after it…so that’s exactly what I’m doing. I want any and all the sports broadcasting experience I can get because that is the career goal.

Sacrifices are necessary for positives gains. If you want something bad enough, go after it and do whatever it takes.

I always take time to introduce myself to university officials, the television crew and each teams’ broadcast crew because I never know when I may come across them again.

Butler’s play-by-play guy could move on to ESPN radio or the Duquesne sports information director may be hired at the University of Florida. Either way, I want to leave an image in their mind about what I have, can and will do. At the least when these guys hear of a job opening or have one themselves, they just might remember my name.
