Don Fischer is one of the best sports broadcasters in the business. In his 39th year as the play-by-play voice of the Indiana Hoosiers, Fischer has received numerous awards throughout the years.
For the 22nd time, “Fisch,” has been named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. NSSA consists of approximately 700 leading sportscasters and sportswriters from throughout the country. Each year, NSSA honors a sportscaster and sportswriter from each state and nationally.
Indianapolis Star IU beat writer Terry Hutchens was once again named Indiana Sportswriter of the Year.
ESPN’s Dan Shulman will be honored as National Sportscaster of the Year at the annual awards banquet on June 11, 2012 in Salisbury, NC. Well deserved. The three guarantees in life are death, taxess and Don Fischer being named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year. There’s no question that he is the best in the state and I would put him up against about any radio play-by-play broadcasters in the country.
With one of the most recognized voices in Indiana, Don Fischer is a legend in Indiana. Everyone I know, grew up listening to Fisch on the radio and he has called three of the team’s five national championships. He has received various offers to go elsewhere, but instead chose to stay in Bloomington and he has called IU football and basketball games since 1973.
“I so thoroughly enjoy watching a game and being able to describe it for somebody else’s mind, Fischer said in the Big Ten Network video below. “That’s what play-by-play is all about in radio.”
