The Indiana Fever got exactly who they wanted. With the ninth selection, the Fever drafted Stanford point guard Jeanette Pohlen in the 2011 WNBA Draft.
The 6-foot guard averaged 15.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game at Stanford. She was named the 2011 Pac-10 Player of the Year and selected to the 2010 and 2011 All-Pac-10 Team.
A 41.3% shooter from 3-point range in her college career, she will be another sharp-shooting weapon.
“We’re really excited – we have someone who is a consistent shooter from the outside – she can play the 1, 2 or 3,” said new Fever assistant coach Stephanie White. “She gives us added depth on the perimeter. She’s a great shooter and there aren’t that many great shooters out there any more. She’ll spread the floor and give us versatility on the perimeter.”
Due to the loss of point guard Tully Bevilaqua in the free-agent market, the Fever were set on finding another guard to compliment third-year point guard Briann January.
I like the pick for the Fever. She’s a smart, tenacious guard that helped lead the Stanford Cardinals to the 2011 Final Four in Indianapolis. I watched her live in the first semi-final game when they lost to eventual champion, Texas A&M. Indiana is a veteran-heavy team so adding a young gun to help around the perimeter will be beneficial to the Fever who are still seeking their first WNBA Championship.
The Fever selected Jori Davis out of Indiana University with their third-round pick. She averaged 19.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 points in her senior season. Davis was named 2009-2010, 2010-11 Second Team All-Big Ten and is third all-time in free throws made and attempted at IU. She also sits 8th on the Hoosiers all-time scoring list with 1,586 points.
I look forward to working with Pohlen and the rest of the Fever this summer – my 10th year.
