The dream has come true for another Indianapolis native. Former North Central star Amber Harris was drafted 4th overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2011 WNBA Draft.
Harris (right) averaged 18.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in her senior season at Xavier University. She was also back-to-back Atlantic 10 Player of the Year (2009-10, 2010-11).
The 6-5 forward will make an immediate impact with the Lynx who also took UConn’s Maya Moore with the number one pick.
There has been a lot of talk about the recent NBA success of players from central Indiana and now we have a couple on the women’s side.
In addition to Harris, the Atlanta Dream selected former Brebeuf Jesuit star Ta’Shia Phillips, also from Xavier.
There are a lot of coincidences between Harris and Phillips. Each were from Indianapolis and each were named Indiana Miss Basketball in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
Amber was a part of the first two women’s basketball state championships at North Central High School in 2004 and 2005. She was a force down low that nobody at the high school level could reckon with.
I’ve known Amber for a very long time. In fact, I called every one of her dunks in high school. Watch below. (Note: My voice is much deeper now).
