INDYCAR Announces Possible Changes

Will Power turns some practices laps in the 2012 DW chassis.

The IZOD IndyCar Series has a lot to look forward to in 2012.  After last season tragically ended in October with the passing of Dan Wheldon, league officials are looking ahead toward the future.  And they are focused on gaining a new audience and improving the racing as soon as possible.

1.    There will be single-file restarts at Indianapolis, Texas and Fontana.

This is a move that might upset some IndyCar fans because the double-file restarts sure did provide great entertainment last year on the high-speed ovals.  Just remember the restarts at the 500 alone…they were crazy!  But, this is a move that is necessary at least this year.  Having these cars start single-file is a safety issue.  But don’t be discouraged because these restarts still provide great entertainment.  Plus, the other 13 races will still have double-file restarts.

2.    INDYCAR wants three heat races to determine qualifying order in Iowa.

The league has found success with the Firestone Fast Six on road and street courses for qualifying.  So, why not try out a “fan-friendly” way to do this on certain ovals?  Officials are hoping for this at Iowa.  Starting positions will be determined after three heat races before the race.  Get your tickets that weekend, because the heat races will be just as thrilling as the race.

3.    Push-To-Pass won’t be available at the start of the year.

The “push-to-pass” button on the steering wheels sounds like (at this point), it won’t be available until late this year, but probably next year.  But, when it comes out, it should be more powerful than it was this past season.

Besides news on potential race rules, there has been plenty of news off the track too.

1.    Rubens Barrichello may be close to getting a ride at KV.

It sounds like there is a better chance every single day that goes by that F1 driver Rubens Barrichello will be in an IndyCar for at least a few races this season.  This would be a great marketing opportunity for the series too, as he is one of the most recognizable drivers in the world.

2.    Firestone extends partnership with league through 2014.

This isn’t “headline” news, but it’s great for the league.  It’s good to have races NOT decided because of tire wear.

3.    INDYCAR signs other sponsors.

INDYCAR announced it has struck deals with Discover, Lids and Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka.  Each of these sponsors are trying things to promote the sport.  It’s good for the league in this economy to be getting sponsors like this.
