If you were ever unsure of what college to attend to, this week at Indiana will give you a great indication. I decided to attend Indiana University because I grew up following athletics from the very beginning, it was close to home and I knew this was a great fit. For others, I know it’s not so easy.
This week is Little 500 week, beginning back in 1951 when Howdy Wilcox Jr. decided to model a bike race after the Indianapolis 500. It’s more than just a bike race on Saturday – it’s a week full of social festivities all week long.
The event has hosted big names such as President Obama (the year before elections), Mark Cuban and Lance Armstrong. The seven-time Tour de France winner spoke highly of the Little 500.
“I’ve attended Super Bowls, World Series and the Monaco Grand Prix, but the coolest event I ever attended was the Little 500,” Armstrong said.
Tonight, students will experience something most students could only imagine. Often known as “the best rapper alive,” Lil Wayne will perform at IU’s Assembly Hall along with Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross that I first broke on February 17th. This is the concert of a lifetime and a memorable story to an IU student’s life.
Six tour buses and 13 semi-trucks were brought in to make this concert possible. Tickets sold-out to students in less than four hours and didn’t even reach public sales.
There’s no way another campus even competes with Indiana this week. In addition to this concert, GLOWfest is showcasing Pretty Lights Chiddy Bang, Mansions On the Moon, George Watsky, The Main Squeece, and Bryce Fox and Daniel Weber on Thursday, April 14th. Then on Friday prior to the men’s race, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller are will perform.
Many Indiana students are proud of the following quote: “More alcohol is consumed in one week during Little 500 than 85% of colleges consume in a year.” This year is bound to be one of the most memorable (or not).
