The Knicks and Carmelo Anthony finally got their wish. After wanting out of Denver since last summer, Anthony has been dealt to the New York Knicks in a blockbuster trade.
Last offseason, the Nuggets offered Carmelo a three-year extension for $65 million dollars. He declined and basically said he wanted out. Amare Stoudemire signed with the struggling Knicks and completely changed the team.
New York currently sits sixth in a top-heavy Eastern Conference led by Boston, Miami, Chicago, and Orlando. Now you can add New York to that mix. The tides have turned as the more of the most talented NBA players are now in the East.
Here are the terms of the agreement.
Denver receives: Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks’ 2014 first-round draft pick, two second-round picks and $3 million in cash according to the Denver Post.
New York receives: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. The Knicks will also get Corey Brewer in a trade with Minnesota.
Minnesota receives: Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry.
Who I feel bad for is General Manager Donnie Walsh. He had a patient and strategic plan in rebuilding the Knicks. The Pacers loss was the Knicks gain and he has rebuilt this team from the ground up. It has been reported by multiple sources that this was Isiah Thomas, James Dolan, Worldwide Wes and Leon Rose making the deal happen. Walsh opposed it, which may eventually lead to his separation from the Knicks after this year.
The Knicks have a heck of a 1-2 punch now between Melo and Amare. And don’t forget about Chauncey Billups because he has been one of the most clutch shooters down the stretch in the last five years. The guards are there, the talent is there. Think this intrigues Chris Paul about joining the duo after this season? Absolutely.
I am frustrated by the fact that the top players in the league are joining forces. What happened to the day where the star players were there for the good and bad, and built their team up from scraps. Reggie Miller didn’t dart to NY to join John Starks, Patrick Ewing and company. He was the face of the Pacers franchise, a role he truly relished.
There’s the original big three in Boston plus veteran washed-out talent, Heatles in Miami, great six in LA (Kobe, Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Artest, Fisher), and Howard, Arenas and Turkoglu in Orlando.
I miss the old days where the majority of the teams have a star player that laid it all out on the line, night in and night out. It’s great for the star-studded teams. But as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
Amare and Carmelo will most likely make their debut together Wednesday night against the Bucks. The two come to Indianapolis Tuesday, March 15th.
Below is a comical song (to the tune of Black and Yellow) a producer of WFAN wrote about Carmelo joining Amare in the Big Apple.
