Knicks waive Troy Williams

Troy Williams, New York Knicks, Indiana Basketball

Troy Williams was waived Monday by the New York Knicks, the team announced. The 23-year-old Indiana University product was on a non-guaranteed deal and the Knicks needed to make one move to trim their roster to 15, the league maximum, by the start of the season.

They added Kevin Knox (ninth) and Mitchell Robinson (36th) in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Williams spent part of the 2017-18 season with Houston (four games) and New York (17). He missed the Knicks’ final five regular-season games after suffering a jaw fracture in a loss to the Detroit Pistons on Mar. 31.

He then appeared in all five Knicks summer league games in Las Vegas and averaged 11.8 points (on 46-percent shooting), 4.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

Williams’ contract guaranteed him $100,000 if he was still on New York’s roster by August 1. It’s likely that he will get snatched up by a team needing depth at wing and willing to work with him on development.

Noah Vonleh, also a member of IU’s 2013 freshman class, is a free agent as well. He most recently played for the Chicago Bulls.
