Just 200 laps. Over three hours long. That’s what every rider taking part in today’s Little 500 race works their butt off every day for. The chance to leave their mark at Indiana University and carry that pride all year long. To win the most prestigious college bicycle race of the year.
It’s an experience that bonds riders together for life. Friday, alumni for many teams come down to make final preparations, attend the women’s race, go over logistics and eat dinner together. All in part to win this big race.
Instead of going south to binge drink during Spring Break, these riders set west to prepare for the race. While their peers are on the beach, they are riding through the mountains.
I am amazed at the determination and the amount of time these athletes dedicate towards this one day race. Part of their training regimen includes running stadium stairs, long distance bike rides, daily training and more. Not only do they train all year long, but they also avoid the peer pressure of taking part in week-long Little Five festivities.
Those not competing will be making the most of “the world’s greatest college weekend.” After three huge concerts during the week, students spend the weekend drinking anything in sight.
Most fraternities will begin “tailgating” if you will for the race at 6 a.m. Nothing says Little 500 race day like morning drinking. And it will continue all day and night—those not passed out will hit the bar scene.
The riders will mount their bicycles at Bill Armstrong Stadium around 2 p.m. and the race will begin shortly after introductions and a parade lap. The race is televised on Indiana alum Mark Cuban’s television network, HDNet. It can also be heard on IU’s student station, WIUX.
I’ll have full coverage after the race with pictures and video. Stay tuned.
And happy drinking.
