Matt Howard serves as honorary starter at IMS

Just over a month removed from the 2011 NCAA title game, Matt Howard was in the spotlight again.

The Connorsville  native served as the honorary starter for practice Wednesday that never got started.

It was yet another washout at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway—the third one in four days.

The poor weather didn’t keep fans from visiting the track, with the chance to get autographs and have interaction with their favorite driver.

As you see above, Howard met with Danica Patrick and the two talked for about ten minutes. Danica was familiar with Butler’s success but had to be reminded about what exactly went down. The low-key Howard kept the conversation going and enhanced his IndyCar knowledge.

After his meeting with Danica, he walked across the C garages, into Ed Carpenter’s stall. Carpenter is a Butler graduate and basketball season ticket holder. The two have interacted many times, most frequently at St. Vincent’s Sports Performance while working out. Both Butler alums have great respect for one another and their athletic abilities.

I had a chance to chat with Matt during this time. He enjoyed coming out to the Speedway and was honored to be the starter. He continues to work out at St. Vincent’s and will soon head to other cities for team workouts. Despite the washout Wednesday, Howard made the most of the opportunity. And good for him…he deserves it.
