Mitchell retires Thad Young’s high school jersey; Young upgrades school’s weight room

Back in Memphis, Tennessee with the Pacers to play the Grizzlies Wednesday night (8:00 pm ET), Thad Young spent the night before back at his old stomping grounds.

Joined by his immediate family, Young’s No. 33 jersey was retired by Mitchell High School and he was presented with a framed jersey that detailed his accomplishments – on and off the basketball court.

Like his 4.3 GPA, finishing in the top 5 of his graduating class, and being a McDonald’s All-American. Young is the school’s all-time leading scorer, rebounding leader, and was the 2006 Gatorade Player of the Year.

Young, now 29, went on to play one season at Georgia Tech and then he was drafted 12th overall in 2007 by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Thad and his wife, Shekinah, own Forever Young Beauty Bar in Memphis and have previously run promotions such as free back-to-school haircuts for kids, plus a free backpack and school supplies. That’s why it wasn’t surprising that Young provided the financial resources to overhaul the school’s weight room.

“Ah man, this is nice!” Young shouted as he checked out the renovated weight room for the first time.
