Victor Oladipo grew up in Maryland — The DMV, he says — and spent just three seasons in Bloomington (2010-13) playing at Indiana University and yet he calls Indiana his second home. Local fans have rooted for him ever since his days at IU.
“Yeah, it’s always fun to come back here, see some familiar faces and see that IU red. It’s always a special feeling,” Oladipo said afterwards.
Yes, there was plenty of red in the stands and the 23-year-old received a warm reception during pre-game intros Thursday night. The Magic’s spread lineups gave the Pacers issues from the beginning and they rolled to a 114-94 road win at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. By the way they outplayed the Pacers, you wouldn’t have known the Orlando Magic, now 32-43, were already eliminated for postseason play.
Oladipo, who the Magic drafted second overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in over 35 minutes. This was the third and final time the Magic would play in Indianapolis this season, including one preseason contest, and finally Oladipo was able to leave victorious.
The Magic had lost seven consecutive games in the series, including six in a row at the Fieldhouse dating back to Feb. 4, 2012.
“It’s special,” Oladipo to finally win in Indy. “It’s definitely special. Definitely a blessing to be able to come back here and get a win. Now I’m looking forward to getting more.”
A group of fans even spelled out #FeatheryVic, as seen above, on poster boards. Oladipo began using the word “feathery” during his time in Bloomington.
