Sunday’s running of the Brickyard 400 is more than just a race for driver Regan Smith. That’s because he’ll be driving for a special cause that means a lot to both him and his team.
Smith’s 78-car pays tribute to those involved and affected by the Aurora, Colorado shooting on July 20th. The names of the 12 victims are featured on both rear side panels and the back of the car, well, says it all. “For those lost, those injured, and countless acts of bravery. 7/20/12”
“It definitely carries a special meaning to us,” Smith said after qualifying 14th. “Our shops not even ten miles from where the shootings happened and our entire team lives in Denver. We’re all based in Denver — myself included.”
The events that occurred are unfathomable but this classy move by Smith is a feel-good story. And hopefully, it helps ease the pain of victim’s family and friends.
“It’s been a tough couple weeks for those folks. We want to number one, make sure to remember the people who lost their lives and all the victims. We want to make sure they all know that we’re thinking of them, as well as the people that helped save lives.”
“There’s a lot of heroes that came out of that situation. The more and more those stories come out, the more that is coming apparent. And in my opinion, I choose to focus on that other than the negative of one sick person.”
He, like so many others, have taken the high road. Instead of commenting on a man who committed the heinous crime, celebrate and honor the victims. Each one, with their own unique story.
Smith couldn’t help but smile when asked about this opportunity to recognize the Aurora community and those who lost their lives on that evening.
The incident occurred during an off-week, when most of the Furniture Row Racing Team was in town. Fortunately for Smith and his crew, nobody close was affected.
“There’s a few that have stories about people that they knew maybe of a distant neighbor or a friend knew them. I don’t think anybody had direct relationships with anyone there.”
“It’s very special for us to have this on the car and we’d love nothing more than to give everyone in Aurora and Denver something to smile about on Sunday afternoon as they watch this racecar and know that everyone here in Indy is thinking about them still.”
Tune in to the 19th-annual Brickyard 400 Sunday and see Smith’s Chevy 78-car that honors the 12 victims. The race is scheduled to begin at 1:19 p.m. EST on ESPN.
