132 long days later, the NFL Lockout is over, finally.
The 32 player representatives had a conference call at 11 am to discuss the new collective bargaining agreement and the reps voted unanimously to approve the new CBA, ending the lockout.
Then at 3 pm, the league will host a call with GMs, following by head coaches at 5 pm. All this, to make sure everyone is on the same page and to answer any questions.
And the best part about the agreement: 10 years, no opt-out clause. We won’t have to deal with this ordeal again for a decade.
A shortened off-season now sets up what should be an extremely busy week for teams–may be busier than draft week.
NFL teams will begin training camp this week–10 starting on Wednesday, 10 on Thursday, 10 on Friday and the final two on Sunday (Jets & Texans).
The Colts will stay on their usual schedule, and report to Anderson for training camp on July 31st. Camp will begin on August 1st.
After all the missed time, rookie camp, and off-season workouts, it’s critical for teams to get started ASAP and make the most of their time. But most importantly from the Colts standpoint, it will allow Peyton Manning to interact with his trainers and doctors.
Below is the current timeline for teams this week.
Monday: Teams move to 90-man rosters and free-agent list distributed. Most teams have a solid 40 players under contract, meaning they most sign 50 for training camp, which won’t be easy.
Tuesday: Players can return to team facilities. At 10 am, teams can start signing rookies, undrafted free agents and tentative agreements with all free-agents.
Wednesday: 10 teams begin training camp, 15 days before their first preseason games.
Thursday: Teams can begin making cuts at 4 pm. The Colts will have some casualties because they are $1.8 million over the salary cap.
Friday: Teams can begin filing transactions to the league office at 6 p.m. ET.
Aug. 4: The players must re-certify and pass the collective bargaining agreement by the players. Plus, by August 4th, the teams must be under the salary cap (the Colts are one of seven teams over the cap).
“We are delighted the collective bargaining process has now resulted in a long term resolution that is fair to all concerned,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement. “We are also grateful to all the dedicated individuals, on both sides of the table, who devoted tremendous effort to reaching this resolution. We now eagerly look forward to focusing all our energy and efforts on the 2011 NFL season, which will culminate with Super Bowl XLVI, proudly hosted by the City of Indianapolis.”
Indianapolis will have some big decisions to make in regards to free-agents. Some big name players the Colts are focused on retaining include: Joseph Addai, Charlie Johnson, Melvin Bullitt, and Adam Vinatieri.
Things will be interesting this next week with Bill Polian’s son Chris, now leading the charge. He directed his first ever draft in late April and has made some staff changes after his father Bill took a reduced role now as Vice-Chairman.
Teams are excited and players are anxiously awaiting. This is all great news for teams and fans but primarily fans. The only game that will be missed is the Hall of Fame challenge in Canton.
