University of Miami athletics in big trouble – Purdue QB Robert Marve listed

What an investigative piece by two of the best sports journalists, Yahoo! Sports’ Charles Robinson and Dan Wetzel. This is devastating and BIG for collegiate athletics.

During a 11-month investigation, “a University of Miami booster, incarcerated for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme, has told Yahoo! Sports he provided thousands of impermissible benefits to at least 72 athletes from 2002 through 2010.”

This could be monumental in the college football landscape as Nevin Shapiro broke about every rule in the book to befriend and take care of Miami athletes.

“At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.”

This University of Miami scandal makes USC and Ohio State look holy.

One interesting note–Purdue quarterback and former Miami transfer Robert Marve is mentioned with a full list of benefits. What this means for the senior QB is unknown at this point. But the facts, pictures and audio tell the story.

– Drinks and VIP access during strip club visits.
– Food, drinks and entertainment at Shapiro’s $6 million Miami Beach mansion on multiple occasions.
– At least one cash gift.
– At least two dinners at Prime 112 steakhouse.
– Transportation by Shapiro’s bodyguards and Miami staffer Sean Allen.
– Drinks and VIP access at nightclubs on multiple occasions.

The NCAA was on University of Miami campus Tuesday for their investigation. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this–from all standpoints.
