Larry Bird and Lance Stephenson share mutual admiration for one another.
Bird, at this time last season, said he believed Stephenson was the Pacers’ best player. Stephenson speaks highly of Bird, who has been like a father-figure to the 21-year-old.
Stephenson just completed his second NBA season where he saw action in 42 games last season. Following his game at the Knox Indy Pro Am, Stephenson talked with a few assembled media about Bird, the report that he isn’t returning next season, and what he’s doing this offseason.
He gave a smart, PR answer, saying that he was unaware of the report and hoped that it was false.
“I don’t know anything. I hope he doesn’t leave, if that’s the word. But I hope it’s just a rumor…he means a lot. He built this organization.”
UPDATE: Bird acknowledged Stephenson in his news conference to announce that he was stepping away. He noted that he will run Thursday’s draft and go with the team to Orlando where “I get to see my boy Lance play every minute of every game.” The room erupted in laughter.
