Paul George is nearly six months removed from that one night that changed his basketball career, and likely his life, forever. He ran back on defense during essentially a pick-up game with USA Basketball, and went up to swat James Harden’s shot on a fast break.
While most players may not have went up for the block, or even run back for that matter, George did. He was still playing.
But then, his hard landing went wrong.
Snap.
He would require immediate surgery in Las Vegas to repair an open tibia/fibula fracture and his fifth NBA season was surely over before it even began.
Before the injury, Paul said he felt immortal. “I felt I was invincible. I’ve made so many plays where guys go down and I walked up clean from it. So I did feel that nothing bad could ever happen to me while I was on the court.”
Bleacher Report had a crew follow George to document the recovery, what they’re calling “The Road Back.” The first of the series is out, and it focuses on the injury from that very difficult Friday evening that continued into Saturday.
Watch Episode 1 below featuring George and his parents, Paul Sr. and Paulette.
It’s clear George is already thinking about the first time he can suit up with his teammates and return for game action:

Indiana just know I'm working harder than ever. Nothing like playing at home and representing the 317. Some day I wanna pass Reggie! #NoDiss
