After a 2-14 season, changes at the Colts practice facility on West 56th Street are inevitable.
Owner Jim Irsay and new General Manager Ryan Grigson are now searching for the next head coach. Grigson will have a lot of input, but it’s clear Irsay, as usual, will have the final say.
While announcing the firing of Jim Caldwell, Grigson discussed what the team is seeking most in their next head coach.
“Leadership,” Grigson emphasized. “We want leadership. Leadership is important. There’s a lot of other components, but we want strong leadership and we want someone who shares this vision in this new era of Colts football.”
As for an offensive or defensive-focused head coach, Grigson noted: “We want the best man and the best leader and the person that’s going to get us where we want to go. And we’re going to find that man.”
Irsay and Grigson have already talked to an array of candidates. Tony Dungy has even aided the Colts in the search process of his former team. This is a critical point for the Colts, as they search for the next guy to lead this team. It’s important that they get it done, and done right.
“I’ve been here a short time and you don’t want to do anything rash in any regard with this. These are big decisions to be made and they’re not ones we’re going to be hurried or rushed into. We’re going to do what we feel is right. We’re going to talk things through and put our minds together and set this franchise in the right direction.”
Colts management will do an extensive search for their next coach in this ‘new era.’ Not just a brilliant mind or experienced coach, but one who can control the locker room, adhere to team brass and represent Indy with integrity.
“We’re going to chip away at this thing and every day we’re going to try to get better, everybody within the organization moving in a common direction with a common vision and goal . . . to be great again.”
