The Pacers have added Willie Reed to their now 17-man rookie/free agent camp roster. Reed was on the floor for the team’s first day of work Tuesday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Reed, who declared for the draft after two years at Saint Louis, went undrafted in 2011. He most recently became available after the Sacramento Kings waived him on Sunday.
The Pacers’ roster is very much in flux as team officials look to lock up their top priority of Lance Stephenson, an unrestricted free agent. To sign him, there’s a chance Luis Scola, who’s deal isn’t fully guaranteed, is a causality. Reserve big man Lavoy Allen is also seeking a new deal. Because Reed has zero NBA experience, he’s likely a backup plan more than anything.
Reed has played 49 combined games in the NBA’s Developmental League with the Springfield Armor and Reno Bighorns. The Kings signed him in March, but he didn’t suit up for the team. Last season with Reno, he averaged 13.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game.
The 6-10, 200-pound forward appeared in five preseason games last fall with the Memphis Grizzlies but was waived before the regular season.
The Pacers can take 13 players to Orlando for Summer League play, which runs July 5-11 at the Amway Center.
