Further evaluation reveals the necessity of ankle surgery for Glenn Robinson III

Glenn Robinson III plans to soon undergo surgery on his left ankle injury it was determined after further evaluation. This decision comes two weeks after he collided mid-air with a teammate as he drove the baseline — and then had a hard landing.

“When the swelling went down and he was able to put a little bit more weight on it, they saw something a little different than initially thought,” coach Nate McMillan said on Thursday. “He will have to go in and get this fixed.

“Our trainers and doctors are working with him on a timeframe to get this done. It’ll be as soon as possible.”

Originally, his outlook was positive after X-rays, MRIs, and meeting with several doctors in the first 24 hours.

“It looked pretty bad,” Robinson III said one day after the spill. “I’m glad that it was only mild. Nothing broke, nothing fractured or anything like that. It was good news.

“The way I fell, my knee buckled up under me and my ankle was under my knee. It was all messed up. Luckily, I think my ankle took a lot of that pressure so it ended up being more of an ankle sprain.”

Well, presumably that ankle absorbed too much of the fall.

His left ankle has been in a tall boot, and he hasn’t been able to put too much pressure on it. When he has walked on it, a significant limp is obvious.

So now, instead of return in late November, Robinson III likely won’t be ready for game action until December — at best. He’s in a contract year and figured to play more than 20 minutes per game with the second unit.

“For him, it’s a disappointment because we initially thought that it was just a serious sprain and that surgery wouldn’t be required,” McMillan said. “And now he has to have surgery. Until they go in and fix that, they won’t really have a timeframe [to return]. He’s disappointed with that, and so are we. But it happens.”

Robinson III discussed his injury on Sept. 30, the day after his hard landing.
