One of Reggie Miller’s most famous records will be broken Thursday in Boston.
Tonight’s big game pits the LA Lakers at the Celtics and Miller will be calling the game on TNT. Ray Allen needs just two 3-pointers to top Miller’s 2,560 career makes.
Who’s third you ask? Surprisingly Jason Kidd, who’s nearly a thousand behind with 1,752.
You know Uncle Reggie hates to see his record beaten. He’s a competitor and perfectionist, hoping that his record mark stood for a long duration.
But he has been classy in the way he is handling it. Monday he tweeted, “For all my followers and Ray Allen’s followers, I can’t wait to be in the building Thurs evening, Lakers vs C’s, as history is made.”
Meanwhile, Allen recognizes the history of the record and passion Miller had for shooting.
“He’s always been a great supporter of everything I’ve done,” Allen said of Miller. “He’s taught me how to be an even better person, how to be humble even when great things happen to you. He had a great career and so many great things have happened to him. So for him to not have any ego or animosity toward me for breaking his record, I’m glad.
I do appreciate the hard work Ray Allen puts into every game. His preparation currently is unmatched in the league. Before each game, Allen comes over in a taxi three hours before tip-off to shoot. Reggie was always known for being the first one to practice and last one to leave. Thus instead of riding the team bus, Allen comes over an hour early to get as many shots up as he can. It’s routine, and he sticks to it.
The two resemble each other. They both have beautiful, fundamental shots. The pair are deadly from the three-point line and go to players when his team needs a shot.
Ray Allen spent seven years in Milwaukee, five years in Seattle and is now in his fourth season in Boston. In his sixteenth season, Allen still sits behind Reggie in many other telling statistics.
Reggie Miller scored over 3,000 more points and 1,00 more points in the playoffs than Allen.
I still believe Reggie is the bigger player and certainly meant more to his team than Ray Allen. Miller spent his entire career with the Indiana Pacers whereas Allen is currently on his third team. He does mean a lot to the Celtics but with such great history, he’s not even in their top five. Meanwhile, when fans think of Pacers basketball, it’s all because of Uncle Reggie.
Both are great shots, hard workers, and true leaders. But I’d give Reggie the nod.
UPDATE: After it happened, Reggie Miller spoke about his discussions with the Celtics to return to the league a few years ago after retiring.
“18 years being at Indiana, I didn’t want to wear another teams jersey.” – #31
