Wrapping up a whirlwind tour at Conseco Fieldhouse today

The streak ends here. My streak. Seven straight days at Conseco Fieldhouse and eight of the last nine.

It all started last nine days ago when the Indiana Pacers hosted the Boston Celtics to the Fieldhouse. Working the 2011 Women’s Final Four plus three more Pacers games including tonight, I should have just slept at Conseco well week long.

Seriously, it has been another memorable opportunity and ride that very few are able to experience.

Working a Final Four added another big event to my list that already included the Big Ten Tournament, WNBA Finals, and NBA playoffs. Next year, the goal is the Super Bowl. In doing so, I saw the little things necessary to put on an event. Whether it was signage, logistics or taking care of the media, I observed.

John Dedman of the Indiana Sports Corp is a true pro. I’ve worked with him very closely during the Final Four. This guy is one of the best and one of the valuable pieces as to why Indianapolis gets big events.

In addition to observing the setup and group putting on the event, this was also a chance to observe how the media approaches these kind of events. Depending on their job and event, they write stories on the game, sidebars on the event or a combination of both. In the case of the Indianapolis Star, they had four writers covering every event for complete coverage.

I know this is where I belong. I know this is what I want to do. Don’t get be wrong, the days can be tedious and long but there’s no question the job is fitting. The ultimate goal: be the play-by-play guy for a team.

Until then I’ll keep working, observing, and learning.
