Coach Hunter Strives to Help the Underprivileged

The animated IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter continues to give back. Today the high-spirited coach hosted a golf outing in Lebanon at the Golf Club of Indiana benefiting Samaritan’s Feet, Hunter’s ongoing cause.

Hunter joined up with Samaritan’s Feet a couple years ago generating a lot recognition and interest. The charity helps to provide shoes to underprivileged children in developing countries. Hunter has already made a couple trips to South Africa and has another one planned in a month.

“We’re always still trying to raise some money for a lot of different things. It takes a lot of money to send the shoes to where we are going to. Our goal right now, I am going to South Africa the first week of August so I want to send about 100,000 pairs of shoes there that would be great.”

Behind the help and passion of Coach Hunter, he has managed to raise over 200,000 pairs of shoes. His enthusiasm is contagious. These shoes are then given to children who have never owned a pair and are gracious of the gift. In honor of Hunter’s efforts, he was awarded the 2010 Pathfinder Award along with Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Each year over 200 coaches go shoe-less for a game in support of Hunter and Samaritan’s Feet.

A beautiful day for an event, Colts punter Pat McAfee came out to play some golf and show his support at GCI. McAfee, preparing for his second NFL year was excited to play in the outing and support such a great cause.

“Well I’m new to the city so it’s nice to get out and meet people that I’m entertaining on Sunday and also the people that support the Colts and help the Colts go. It’s just nice to get out in the community and meet people, talk and also play some golf with great gentleman like this, and also AC (Anthony Calhoun). It’s just a lot of fun.”

Coach Ron Hunter heads into his seventeenth season on the bench for the Jaguars. He remains under contract with IUPUI through the 2015-16 season.
