Colts treat fans to open minicamp practice

Andrew Luck took the field publicly for the first time Wednesday as the Indianapolis Colts QB when the team held an open minicamp practice at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Call it what you want — ‘fan appreciation day’ or ‘an open practice to sell remaining season tickets’. Regardless, it was a special afternoon for the 7,500 or so fans that were on hand. The roof and window were open which made for a great atmosphere.

And a smart move by the team — keeping the Colts fresh on fans’ minds during the offseason, selling some gear and putting the No. 1 draft pick on display.

The team was gutted, so much so, that even the players are unfamiliar with everyone they share a locker room with. This offseason event for fans was much needed face time.

The open practice lasted two hours and about every area was covered. The Colts opened with individual drills and then worked in their separate groups. To close practice, Luck and the number-one unit drove down the field in a time-sensitive situation.

Andrew Luck took command of the offense and seemed confident in just his second day with the entire team. Remember, he arrived from California over the weekend after finishing up school and will head back for graduation this weekend.

He did miss some throws, especially long, but that’s just a matter of getting comfortable and on the same page with his receivers. It was unusual to see throws hit the ground because in the Peyton Manning era, that was a rarity.

While all that was going on, Adam Vinateri and Pat McAfee worked together on their kicking. And neither missed. Vinateri drilled one from 51 yards out and McAfee connected on a kick from over 60 yards out, and it could have gone another 10 yards.

It was a pleasant afternoon, with kids out of school, for practice at the stadium that is unfamiliar to most of the players.
