When the success of a team is measured, you must first look at the character of the players. What attributes do they bring to the team other than their abilities on the court?
The Indiana Pacers of old were not only successful on the court, but it was obvious that the group was bound for greatness.
This weekend I was flipping through the channels when I came across ESPN’s NBA Shootaround which included former Pacers Jalen Rose and Chris Mullin. Later on, the roundtable talked with Mark Jackson who was calling the Lakers game later that night.
One night, three former Pacers, national television.
Jackson and Rose have been analysts on the network since 2007. Mullin on the other hand was getting his first shot on the air…on a night that was disastrous for ESPN because the Heat vs. Magic game at Tampa was canceled because of a wet court.
That meant filling for over two hours.
What it had me thinking however was how special the Pacers use to be. These guys were not only winning, but also doing all the right things. The collective group added much to the community and the city while playing in Indianapolis.
And don’t forget the legend, Reggie Miller who is also an analyst—but for TNT. Add in the Davis brothers, big smooth Sam Perkins, the dunking Dutchman Rik Smits and you have one talented team.
All of these former Pacers were proud of their time in ‘Naptown.’ The 1999-2000 team took the Pacers to the franchise’s only NBA finals appearance but fell to the Lakers in 6 games. That team left a mark in Pacers fans across the country—a void that fans are still waiting to be filled.
Next time you are tuning into NBA coverage, enjoy watching these former Pacers flourish in their life after the NBA and on national television.
