IndyCars Ready To Hit Edmonton…Again

When you look at the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule, you notice that Edmonton is slated for this upcoming weekend.  You probably think that there is nothing different about it from previous years.  But, wait just a minute…there is something different about this year’s event: THE TRACK!

After three years of racing on the same track layout at Edmonton City Centre Airport, the league decided to try a new track design at the same facility.

So far, all the drivers seem to be excited for the new track layout, and we (as fans) should be too.  The last few races at the previous track were quite honestly some of the most boring I have ever seen.

Usually, I am the kind of guy who enjoys watching IndyCar over NASCAR on race weekends because there is just more excitement in open-wheel.  But I can say the Brickyard 400 was more exciting than the Honda Indy Edmonton was last year.  (It was on the same day if you remember.)

If this year’s race flops, do not expect it to be on the schedule next year for that reason.  But, I don’t think it will flop.  One of the reasons for this (other than the new design) is because Octane Motorsports Events, Inc. is promoting the event.  And this company can promote races incredibly well.  (It also promotes the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada.)  So, the crowd should be there too!

As for the race and what to expect, you have to look at Will Power.  This race could determine whether he even has a shot at catching Dario Franchitti in points before the season’s end.  The last two years, he has finished first and second at the track.  He’s probably glad to be returning to the airport he has seen so much success at, especially after finishing worse than 20^th place the last two races.

Of course, like in every IndyCar race, you need to keep your eye on the other Penske and Ganassi boys too.  But, with these Canadian races, two guys always get a little extra motivation:  Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy.

They have the fan support and can clearly race up at the front (although it’s been few and far between where they FINISH up there this year.)  Don’t be surprised if one of them (more likely Tag) finishes in the top five.
