On the road with the Indiana Fever

In the midst of my tenth year working for the Indiana Fever, it’s been enjoyable to look back at the many teams and many faces involved.

At 15-6, the Fever currently hold the best record in the Eastern Conference and second best in the league behind Minnesota.

For the past six or so years, I have worked every home game. I have the same routine and do the same things night after night–although the visiting teams (who I am responsible for) can be vastly different.

For the last five years, I have enjoyed getting out of the comfort of Conseco Fieldhouse to help the team on the road for a few games and see the other venues. I have been to Minnesota, Detroit (before they became Tulsa), Chicago (playing at UIC) and now Chicago at Allstate Arena near O’Hare.

Not only do I enjoy the trip, but I learn from a different perspective. We have a golf cart to transport the visiting team’s gear. We have a huge parking garage for players/staff. And we have an arena that absolutely is the best in the country. We are spoiled and lucky…thus every time I now walk inside, I don’t take it for granted.

I also have a blast getting to know the players on a more personal side. Each one of them has a story, interests, and desires. Tamika Catchings has her own foundation helping youth achieve their dreams. And Tammy Sutton-Brown has published her own children’s book that is coming out in the fall.

Not only are they extraordinary on the court but off of it as well.

The other thing I like doing on the road is taking care of the Fever how they’re use to. Many places have ball kids that try to rebound and help out in pre-game but they’re like 12 years-old. I know the team’s routine and preferences. All in all, it gives them a better experience.

It’s looking more and more like this will be my last season with the team, at least in my current capacity. I love what I do but broadcasting is my passion.

Sadly, another year is nearing the end, one that probably be my last. But these are all memories that will last a lifetime.
