The preseason is complete and now every NFL team has the tough job of solidifying their rosters and making cuts.
Rosters which opened training camp at 90, were cut to 80 last week. And by 4 p.m. Saturday, every team must have their final decisions in and roster trimmed to 53.
It’s a tough day for so many on both sides. Coaches see potential in a lot of players and develop relationships with these guys over the last month. The players on the other hand, consist of many undrafted guys or so-called “busts,” looking to prove themselves on the gridiron.
Indianapolis must cut 27 players by 4 p.m. tonight and it won’t be easy. Expect some surprises.
Below is a list of the 27 players the Colts cut from the team release.
Al Afalava, DB
Travis Baltz, P
Chris Brooks, WR
John Chick, DE
Chris Colasanti, LB
Kyle DeVan, OG
Tyson DeVree, TE
John Gill, DT
David Gilreath, WR
Michael Hamlin, DB
Tommie Harris, DT
Javarris James, RB
Brandon King, DB
Jake Kirkpatrick, OL
Ricardo Mathews, DT
Michael Matthews, TE
Jacques McClendon, OG
Larrone Moore, WR
Kerry Neal, LB
Ollie Ogbu, DT
Dan Orlovsky, QB
Taj Smith, WR

Michael Toudouze, OT
Nate Triplett, LB
Vuna Tuihalamaka, LB

Quick reax: I’m am very happy for Indy-natives Darren Evans and Chad Spann earning a spot on the 53-man roster. I think they will play well and provide depth at the running position. Meanwhile, cutting Tommie Harris and John chick baffles me. We’ll divulge into all of this much later.
Update: Sunday the team announced the signing of five guys to the practice squad:
WR David Gilreath, DT Ricardo Mathews, DT Ollie Ogbu, OT Mike Tepper, WR Marshall Williams, WR Chris Brooks, and QB Mike Hartline.
