Shayne Whittington cleared to work at game speed

Pacers rookie Shayne Whittington continues to progress on his path to a full recovery.

Rookie Shayne Whittington is steadily improving each day.

The 6-foot-10 big man tweeted Tuesday evening: “After 13 weeks of rest and rehab, I was finally cleared to workout @ game speed. Felt great today hopefully increase the workload next week!”

Whittington, an undrafted rookie, signed a non-guaranteed deal with the Pacers on July 2nd. If not for his freak accident – a broken left fibula and torn ligament in his left foot – on May 8th during a workout in Chicago, he might have been drafted.

Not only has the 23-year-old Michigan native had to rehab everyday, but he’s missed value time on the floor with coaches, especially during Summer League. Though Whittington was around the team during free agent/rookie camp, he was limited to passing and dribbling drills while standing still.

Pacers coach Frank Vogel provided an update on Whittington earlier Tuesday, saying that he’s now out running and shooting around. “He still has a long ways to go,” Vogel said. “He’s limited to 30 minutes on his workouts. (He’s) doing a lot of movement shooting.”

Pacers president Larry Bird added, “We think he’s going to be a pretty good player for us down the road.”
